Editorial Principles
Before any product is evaluated, these principles govern how we operate. They aren't marketing language — they define constraints that we hold ourselves to editorially and operationally.
- Independence: No sponsored content, no paid rankings, no brand partnerships of any kind. Our editorial decisions are made entirely separately from any commercial relationship.
- Transparency: All affiliate relationships are disclosed at the point of recommendation, and in full on this page. You should know how we make money before you trust our recommendations.
- Accuracy: We correct errors when notified — publicly, completely, and without burying the correction. Review pages are updated when products change materially, and last-updated dates are displayed on every review.
- Specificity: We write for real people in real situations — families, renters, homeowners, and small businesses. Not hypothetical enterprise deployments, not readers with advanced technical backgrounds.
- Plain language: No jargon without explanation. No fear-mongering to drive urgency. Security is a serious topic and deserves clear, honest communication.
Our Evaluation Criteria
Every product we review is scored against seven criteria. These criteria apply across categories, with some adjusted for category relevance — a criterion like "physical deterrent quality" applies to alarm systems but not to password managers.
The core protection the product provides: malware detection rates for antivirus software, encryption strength for VPNs and password managers, physical deterrent quality for alarm systems and cameras, or monitoring reliability for professional services. This is the most heavily weighted criterion.
What data the product collects, how it's stored and used, what's shared with third parties, and what controls users have over their own data. For security products — which by nature operate with elevated access to sensitive systems — this is a non-negotiable evaluation dimension.
How quickly a non-technical user can get meaningful protection up and running, and how much friction the product introduces into daily life once deployed. Security that's too complicated to use correctly is not, in practice, secure.
Uptime and availability, false-positive rates, the quality of customer support when problems arise, and how the company has historically handled security incidents involving its own products or customer data.
The true annual cost of the product, including hardware purchase price, subscription fees, monitoring service costs, installation expenses, and anticipated maintenance or replacement costs. We do not evaluate products solely on sticker price.
Quality and legibility of the privacy policy and terms of service, availability of public security documentation or independent audits, and how clearly the company communicates its practices to ordinary users.
Who this product is actually right for — and equally important, who should look elsewhere. A product that excels for a single user may be poorly suited to a family of four. A product ideal for renters may be a poor choice for homeowners. Context matters.
Our Review Process in 6 Steps
- Category scoping — We determine which threats and gaps are most relevant for our audience using public threat data, security research, and direct reader feedback. We do not chase trending topics or write about products purely because they're commercially popular.
- Candidate identification — We select 8–15 products per category through market research, independent security community discussion, and reader questions. This typically includes market leaders, strong-value alternatives, and products with notable privacy reputations that mainstream coverage underrepresents.
- Criteria scoring — Each product is evaluated against our seven criteria above. Scores are assigned consistently across competing products within a category. We document our reasoning for scores so that pages can be updated accurately when products change.
- Hands-on assessment — We test real setup, user interface, and daily experience wherever possible. For software products this means installation and active use. For hardware this includes physical setup, app configuration, and real-world testing of core functions.
- Editorial review — A second read of every review ensures that claims are supportable by our documented scoring, that copy doesn't read like marketing language, and that the plain-language requirement is met throughout.
- Publication & monitoring — We set review intervals based on how frequently the product category changes. We revisit pages when products, pricing, security track records, or competitive alternatives change materially. Each page displays its last-updated date.
How We Handle Updates
Security products change constantly — firmware updates, pricing changes, new features, data breach incidents, company acquisitions, and quiet degradations after strong launch reviews. The review that was accurate six months ago may not reflect what a reader is buying today.
Each review page displays a "Last updated" date. We maintain review calendars for high-change categories and trigger out-of-cycle updates when a product changes significantly enough to affect our recommendations. If a product has changed since our last update and you've noticed it, the fastest path to a correction is a message through our contact page — we treat reader reports of material changes as high priority.

Commission rates typically range from 1–8% depending on the affiliate program and product category. Amazon Associates rates vary by category and are set by Amazon; we do not negotiate these rates. Direct affiliate arrangements with other vendors may have different structures, but we do not accept arrangements that require us to guarantee a minimum spend level, minimum review score, or editorial coverage.
Affiliate relationships do not influence our scores, rankings, or the narrative of our reviews. Our editorial team evaluates products against our published criteria before any commercial consideration. We would recommend the same products at the same rankings even if no affiliate relationship existed — and in some cases, products we rate highly don't have an affiliate program at all.
The same products we review may appear in competing affiliate programs. We are not exclusive to any affiliate partner, and our rankings are not influenced by commission rate differences between programs. A product earning us a 1% commission receives the same evaluative treatment as one earning 8%.
