Portable Door Locks: Extra Security for Travel and Rentals

Hotel key cards can be duplicated. Airbnb hosts keep spare keys. Apartment maintenance staff have master keys. A portable door lock is a $10 to $30 device that blocks entry from the outside even when someone has a key. Here is what works, what does not, and how to choose one.

Types of Portable Door Locks

🔒

Claw-Style (Addalock Type)

Inserts into the door strike plate gap. Close the door, slide the metal claw into the strike plate, then close the clamp. Works on most inward-opening doors. Price: $10 to $20. Best for hotels and rentals.

🚪

Door Security Bar

Adjustable steel bar braces between the doorknob and floor. Creates massive resistance to forced entry. Price: $15 to $30. Best for apartments and longer stays. Too large for travel carry-on bags.

Door Stop Alarm

Rubber wedge with a built-in 120dB alarm. When someone pushes the door, the wedge resists and the alarm sounds. Price: $8 to $15. Best as a secondary device paired with another lock type.

🔧

Portable Deadbolt

Replaces the existing deadbolt throw with a longer, thicker bolt that you control with a thumb turn. No tools required. Price: $20 to $35. Best for Airbnbs and vacation rentals where you stay multiple nights.

💡
Test before you trust it. After installing any portable lock, close the door fully and try to push it open from the hallway side. Some doors have too large a gap for claw-style locks to grip. Bring a backup option (door stop alarm) in case your primary lock does not fit the door.

How to Use a Portable Door Lock

1

Check the Door First

Make sure the door opens inward (most hotel and apartment doors do). Check that the strike plate is accessible and the gap between door and frame is not too wide. Outward-opening doors require a security bar or door stop instead of a claw lock.

2

Install the Lock

For claw-style locks: open the door, insert the metal plate into the strike plate cavity, close the door, and flip the clamp shut. For security bars: adjust the length so the bar sits at an angle between the knob and floor, then lock it in place.

3

Test It

Push and pull the door from inside. It should not budge. If you can feel give or the lock rattles, reposition it. For added security, place a door stop alarm at the base as a backup alert.

When You Need a Portable Door Lock

🛈
Fire safety note: Portable locks can slow your exit in an emergency. Always know your secondary exit (window, connecting door). Never use a portable lock on a door that is your only exit if the window is not accessible. In a fire, seconds matter.
