It weighs 2 ounces, fits in your palm, and filters up to 100,000 gallons of water through a 0.1 micron hollow fiber membrane — the same technology used in kidney dialysis machines. It removes 99.99999% of bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa from any freshwater source.
What It Removes (and What It Doesn't)
Removes: Bacteria (E. coli, salmonella, cholera), protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium), sediment, and particulates. These are the threats that cause most waterborne illness from untreated freshwater sources — streams, lakes, rainwater collection, flooded tap water.
Does NOT remove: Viruses, chemicals, heavy metals, or dissolved solids. For most North American freshwater sources, viral contamination is rare and the Sawyer MINI is sufficient. For international travel to developing countries where viral contamination is likely, add purification tablets or use a UV purifier.
How to Use It
Three ways: squeeze the included pouch through the filter, attach it to a standard water bottle (SmartWater bottles thread on perfectly), or use it as a drinking straw directly from the source. For emergency prep, the bottle attachment method is fastest and least effort.
The included 16oz squeeze pouch works but is thin and prone to cracking. Replace it with a 1-liter SmartWater bottle — it threads on directly and is far more durable.
Maintenance
The Sawyer MINI's flow rate slows over time as the membrane accumulates particles. Backflushing with the included syringe restores flow. Do this after every use or when you notice reduced output. With regular backflushing, the filter maintains performance for its rated 100,000-gallon lifespan.
Critical: Never let the filter freeze with water inside. Freezing expands trapped water and can create micro-tears in the hollow fiber membrane, compromising filtration without any visible damage. Store it in a warm location during winter.
